KFC soup sale suspended

(Source: Xinhua)

Oct. 30 - Fast food giant KFC's outlets in Tianjin Municipality began on
Friday to suspend the sale of a soup made from an allegedly poisonous
potherb.
The soup's major ingredient "Tianlvxiang", a Chinese wild herb, was said
to have poisoned a little white mouse to death, according to a research
report published Wednesday by Yang Xian, a professor on vegetable study
with the South China Agricultural University.
The KFC's Tianjin branch made an announcement Friday afternoon that it
has sent the sample of the soup to relative organizations for testing,
and suspends the sale until final official results are revealed.
The soup has been promoted as a green food by the fried chicken giant
this year to cater to Chinese people's demand.
KFC has just opened a new outlet in Shanghai earlier this month, bringing
the total number in the Chinese mainland to 1,500.

Jinan archeologists entered a well-preserved underground tomb discovered
at Guodian Town in east suburb of Jinan City for study on Oct. 26. On the
day, construction workers who were building a road found this tomb. 11
frescos inside the tomb were intact and clear-cut, depicting plum
blossoms, chrysanthemum, lotus, pine trees, etc. According to
archeologists, this tomb for an ordinary person in the Qing Dynasty
(1616-1911AD) reflects the typical folk funeral culture at that time.

Yuanmou applied to light Beijing Olympic torch

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-20 14:38:40

Chinanews, Kunming, Oct.19 (By Zhang Min) - Yunnan's Yuanmou County,
hometown of the earliest human beings in China, the Yuanmou men, made an
application to the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) recently in the hope
that the torch for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games be lighted in Yuanmou.
The Yuanmou men who lived on the earth about 1.7 million years ago were
regarded as the starting point of China's history and also among the
world's earliest human beings who knew how to use fire.
Wang Chongliang, chairman of Yunnan Yuanmou Tourism Co., Ltd. which
submitted the application to the Information Office of the State Council
and COC on behalf of Yuanmou County for Yuanmou to be the lighting spot
of Olympic torch, said that green Olympic, scientific Olympic and
humanistic Olympic are three major concepts proposed by 2008 Beijing
Olympic Games and the concepts of "green" and "humanistic" conformed with
Yuanmou's two characteristics.
Yuanmou is situated in northern Yunnan and closely related to "fire."
Yuanmou became the origin of human culture as Yuanmou men were among the
first to use fire. Due to its location in the Jinsha River Canyon, it is
always dry and hot here. Therefore, Yuanmou is one of the few hottest
places in Yunnan. Moreover, it is also known as "natural greenhouse" and
an important vegetable producing region in Yunnan. The "torch festival"
is a ceremonious festival of the Yi ethnic group living here. During June
and July in China's lunar calendar, the Yi ethnic group will light
torches to drive away evil spirits and pray for peaceful life. The
magnificent scene of Jinsha River Canyon and marvelous earth forest view
in various forms not only attract more and more tourists, but also make
this place a more and more popular TV and movie base in China. Some
scenes of "the Promise," the latest blockbuster by famous Chinese
director Chen Kaige, were shot here.

Women entrepreneurs have stronger leadership

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-18 15:12:16

Chinanews, Oct. 18 - Not long before, Fortune magazine published an
article, stating that "maybe women have not ruled the whole world, but at
least they have ruled a large portion." Statistics from the China
Association of Women Entrepreneurs show that among Chinese enterprises
run by women, the weight of profitable enterprises is 7.8 percentage
points higher than the comparable figure of enterprises run by males, the
proportion of women-run enterprises that break even 4.3 percentage points
higher than men-run ones and the weight of women-run loss-making
enterprises 12.1 percentage points lower than men-run ones. This exactly
indicates that women at work have greatly strengthened their leadership.
Lu Xiaoya, famous writer, psychologist and senor editor of China Youth
Daily, analyzed that during the course of management and operation, women
have stronger leadership than men. Males prefer independence, self-help
and competition while females attach more importance to interpersonal
communication, mutual dependence and teamwork. When making a decision,
men stress reasonableness while women strive for fairness. In modern
enterprises and society, the so-called success refers more to success
achieved through teamwork. Therefore, if women want to attain stronger
leadership, they should take full advantage of their capability of
teamwork.
IBM Greater China's Human Resources Director Grace Kuo said that more
than 60 years ago in 1942, Ruth Leach became the first female vice
president in IBM's history. In the following year, female employees in
IBM's production departments reached one third of the total. In 1945, IBM
had another female distributor Jacqueline Decker. Grace Kuo believed that
the increase of female staff indicates the rising position of career
women and at the same time boosts enterprises to develop toward
diversification. One can say that women have held up half of the career
arena.

Railways seeking overseas investment

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-21 09:50:15

(Source: China Daily)

Sept. 21 - China's once-monopolized railway sector is riding the rails of
market-opening reform, as it strives to attract overseas capital
investment.
"Foreign enterprises are in talks with domestic railway companies on
investment," Huang Min, chief economist of the Ministry of Railways, told
China Daily yesterday.
The negotiations are expected to bear fruit soon, Huang said, but would
not reveal details of the parties involved, citing business
confidentiality.
According to industry insiders, this means the sector will open more
widely to foreign capital, though overseas investors will not be allowed
controlling interests on the operation of trunk lines.
In July, the Ministry of Railways released guidelines encouraging private
and foreign capital in railway construction and operation.
At least 100 billion yuan (US$12.3 billion) is needed annually to expand
the rail network from the current 73,000 kilometres to the planned
100,000 kilometres by 2020, according to the national plan.
Although the sector has been gradually opening to non-government funding,
investors have been slow in responding to the government's policies.
Only a very small amount of non-State capital has been injected into the
sector in recent years - less than 1 per cent of the total.
The central government's rail construction fund is the main source of
capital for expanding the network, accounting for more than 90 per cent
of the total. The rest comes from local governments and loans from the
China Development Bank.
One of the main reasons for the lukewarm response from private investors
is profit guarantees, said Wang Qingyun, director of the transport
department of the National Development and Reform Commission.
Wang made the remarks while addressing the two-day China Railway
Investment and Financing Reform Forum, which opened in Beijing yesterday.
"Favourable policies must be worked out to boost investor confidence,"
Wang said.
Meanwhile, a fair and transparent ticketing system must be set up to
allow investors to decide prices, he added. The existing fare system does
not allow for price fluctuations in line with market changes, which
raises investor concerns about adequate returns.

City dwellers prefer saving to spending

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-14 11:24:34

(Source: China Daily)

BEIJING, Sept. 14 - Urban Chinese residents' willingness to spend was
down in the third quarter but, paradoxically, retail sales showed robust
growth last month.
According to the third-quarter nationwide survey of urban depositors by
the central bank, more residents prefer putting their money away in banks
than increase consumption.
The survey of 20,000 residents of China's main 50 cities conducted by the
People's Bank of China found that only 29.8 per cent want to spend more
in the third quarter.
The figure fell 0.8 percentage point compared with the second quarter and
decreased 2.5 percentage points compared with the same period a year ago.
However, retail sales, an important indicator of consumption demand, rose
a strong 12.5 per cent year-on-year in August to 504.1 billion yuan
(US$62.2 billion), according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
Qi Jingmei, a senior economist with the State Information Centre, said
the two sets of figures were not contradictory.
"People usually save money to spend on big-ticket items such as cars and
houses," she said. "More savings for the future means less consumption at
the moment."
The central bank's survey suggests that 37.9 per cent of the residents
prefer to save more money in banks, an increase of 1.6 percentage points
from the second quarter and 4.5 percentage points from the same period a
year ago.
Chinese residents' keenness to buy private homes continued to be low,
although their willingness to own homes picked up slightly.

Rumsfeld to make 1st China visit next month

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-08 08:57:53

(Source: China Daily)

US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld will visit Beijing in October, a
leading US military commander said, describing accusations that his
country is trying to contain China as 'nonsense.' [AFP]

BEIJING, Sept. 8 - US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld will visit
China next month, Admiral William J. Fallon, commander of US Pacific
Command, said in Beijing yesterday.
It would be Rumsfeld's first visit to China since assuming office in
2001, but the specific timing and schedule has not been decided yet,
Fallon said.
Fallon is visiting China for the first time since taking over as Pacific
commander in February.
He held talks with Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing yesterday afternoon
before heading to Shanghai and South China's Guangdong Province.
Rumsfeld's visit is expected to add momentum to the increased diplomatic
exchanges between China and the United States.
President Hu Jintao and his US counterpart George W. Bush are scheduled
to meet in New York next week during the United Nations 60th anniversary
summit.
According to Fallon, Bush will visit China following Rumsfeld's trip.
Fallon hoped that not only the top leaders but also people at various
levels could get to know each other well through increased exchanges. "It
will be helpful in reducing the tension," he said.

China to retain not more than 100 SOEs

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-01 15:45:15

Chinanews, Sept. 1 - According to the requirements set by the State
Council, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission
(SASAC) is establishing guidelines and views on the re-adjustment of
state owned capital and reorganization of state-owned enterprises (SOE).
Once this work is accomplished, SASAC will accelerate in turning the
research into policies governing the reorganization of SOE's by next year.
SASAC director Li Rongrong said that the reorganization and adjustment of
SOE has to use the enterprise as its main body, in accordance with the
principle of operating by market forces and allowing a properly set up
board of directors to actually run the company. All these require, as a
next step, a big push forward towards these goals.
"SASAC's goals are clear, to accelerate the growth and expansion of 80 to
100 major companies or corporate groups that are technologically
advanced, reasonably organized, flexibly managed, possessing independent
intellectual property and strong international competitiveness, thus
speeding up the reorganization and adjustment of centrally-owned
enterprises, pushing state capital towards critical areas of important
enterprises involved in relevant state security and state economic
lifeline activities and to pull SOEs towards those major companies that
are internationally competitive." Li Rongrong said.
Up till the end of 2004, SOE has total assets approaching 9.2 trillion
RMB (US$1.13 trillion) and net assets of 3.9 trillion RMB. In Fortune
magazine's 2004 world ranking of the top 500 corporations, eight SOE's
including State Grid Corporation PetroChina, Sinopec, China Mobile, China
Telecom, Sinochem Corporation, Shanghai Baosteel and China National
Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Imp. & Exp. Corp. supervised by SASAC, made
the cut, two more than the 2003 ranking.

Located in Huaiyang County, Henan province, Taihao Mausoleum was where
ancient Chinese ancestor Fuxi founded his capital and passed away. Legend
said more than 6,000 years ago, Fuxi, leader of the Three August Ones,
built the capital and ruled his kingdom in Wanqiu (now called Huaiyang
County) in the east of Henan province. After his death, later generations
built a mausoleum and temple on the spot where he lay forever, therefore
Huiyang was also known as "Capital of Dragon". From Feb. 2 to March 3 in
lunar calendar, tourists and pilgrims from all around China gather in
front of the newly refurbished Taihao Mausoleum, participating in this
splendid ancestor worship function.

China GDP to exceed 15 trillion yuan in 2005

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-20 08:53:55

(Source: CRIENGLISH.com)

Oct. 19 - China's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to exceed 15
trillion yuan (1.85 trillion US dollars) this year, said Premier Wen
Jiabao at the Fifth Session of the 16th CPC (Communist Party of China)
Central Committee.
Explaining the CPC Central Committee's Proposal on the Eleventh Five-year
Program on National Economy and Social Development, Wen cited a
preliminary estimation of the National Bureau of Statistics as saying
that the average GDP growth rate in the past five years would be 8.8
percent, and the total revenue is to hit 3 trillion yuan in 2005, 1.3
times more than that in 2000.
Important progress has been made in strategic economic restructuring,
with turning points achieved in agriculture, especially grain production,
and basic industries including energy, transportation, raw materials,
high-tech and infrastructure construction, he said.
The previous five-year period was an extraordinary era in China's history
because the Chinese people successfully conquered the negative impact
brought by Asian financial crisis, multiple enormous natural disasters
and the SARS epidemic, he said.
China has enhanced and improved macro-control and effectively restrained
unstable and unhealthy factors in the economic situation, propagating
China's economic and social developmental momentum, he said.
