China customs seized 467.9kg of drugs in 2005

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-18 14:36:09

Chinanews, Beijing, Jan. 17 (By Ruan Yulin) - The General Administration
of Customs revealed on Tuesday that last year, customs investigated 164
drug trafficking cases, seized 467.9kg of narcotics of various kind, and
seized 204 drug trafficking suspects.
Targeting the crackdown of organized criminal groups, the destruction of
their networks, the capture of major drug traffickers and the seizure of
narcotics, customs investigated a large number of major drug trafficking
cases. The 467.9kg of seized narcotics include 59kg of heroin, 118kg of
ice, 153kg of opium, 94kg of ketamine and 12kg of cannabis. Among the
solved cases, 63, or 38%, involved more than 1kg of narcotics. Narcotics
seized in these cases amounted to 448.7kg, accounting for 96% of all
seized drugs.
Relevant officials of the General Administration of Customs said that
besides active special programs to crack down drug trafficking, customs
also pushed forward scientific on-site investigation and equipped
front-line narcotics squads with X-ray screening facility, portable
narcotics detectors and precursor chemicals detection cases. Moreover,
customs reinforced supervision of drug trafficking and built a solid
barrier between the mainland and narcotics producing areas in other
countries and regions such as the "Golden Triangle" and determinedly
combat trafficking of new types of narcotics such as ketamine and other
psychotropic drugs and drug trafficking through traveler inspection
channels.

Will children in the 1980s bring consuming boom?

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-11 16:08:29

China now has 90 million children which are the only child in their
families.

Chinanews, Jan 10 C Children born in the 1980s are growing up. As the
first generation under Chinas family control policy, they become
adults, joining the labor force and becoming consumers. Some people
predict that as these children grow up, China will enter into a new round
of consumption boom.
These children, especially those in cities, gather all love from their
parents and grand parents, since they are the only child in their
families. Therefore, they have a large consumption power, as parents,
grand parents (both from mothers side and fathers side) would like to
give them pocket money without hesitation. However, the question remains
as, would products made by Chinese companies suit their taste? Will
Chinese enterprises make profit from them?
As the old saying goes, normal people regard food as their most important
thing. For these children, food also comes first. While they eat
traditional foods like buns and rice, their interest in western food is
more than any of their predecessors, although some of the western foods
are regarded as junk food.
For clothing, people born in the 1980s prefer those that show
individuality or those with a brand name. They will not hesitate to pay
for a pair that cost over 1,000 yuan and fashion devices like laptop
computers, mobile phones, and MP3 become their daily necessitates.
However, among these modern technologies, how many are made by Microsoft
and how many come from domestic manufacturers?
With a good money supply, these children enjoy lots of educational
opportunities. They go to school to play music, learn paintings or
calligraphy, and receive training in football or basketball. Culture
consumption plays an increasingly bigger role in their lives. However,
will they go to see western movies or will they pick up a Hong Kong film
for entertainment?
Housing and automobiles are considered the most effective driving force
to boost consumption and these children will soon become major consumers
in these two sectors. Of course real estate is mainly domestic products
and most Chinese still cannot afford whole, imported vehicle. Yet among
those domestic made cars, how many of them are really made by Chinese
manufactures? In a word, Chinas manufacturing capability can no doubt
meet the consuming demands of the people in 1980s. Yet not many of them
are native products.
If domestic products can not suit their taste, their parents should take
money out of their pockets to pay for those imported, foreign
refrigerators or shirts, or other goods, to meet their demand. Even some
products they use might be marked with a made in China tag, how many
of them are really made by domestic manufacturers (housing is an
exception).
People born in the 1980s will not live the same life as their parents and
they are also different from their predecessors, in the way they think,
act and consume. They will leave their own trace in the historic
development of the Chinese society. How can China make adjustment to
adapt to the changing habits of the new generation? The way China answer
the question will affect the countrys social, economic development in
future.

Bank of China wins key approval for IPO

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-10 09:28:38

(Source: Shenzhen Daily/Agencies)

BEIJING, Jan. 10 - BANK of China (BOC), the country's second-biggest
lender, has secured key approval from the State Council to launch a US$6
to US$8 billion Hong Kong initial public offering (IPO) in the first half
of 2006, sources familiar with the deal said Monday.
Bank of China plans to file a preliminary listing application with the
Hong Kong bourse as soon as this week, pending final approval from the
China Securities Regulatory Commission, the sources said.
The parent firm of Hong Kong-listed BOC Hong Kong has hired Goldman
Sachs, UBS and BOC International to underwrite the deal, which is on
track to be China's second-largest IPO.
Bank of China plans to offer about 15 percent of its enlarged share
capital. Its planned listing follows China Construction Bank, which
raised US$9.2 billion in the country's largest-ever initial public
offering in October by selling 13.5 percent of its share capital at 1.96
times book value.
At US$6 to US$8 billion, the float will value Bank of China at US$40 to
US$53 billion, compared to China Construction Bank's current US$84
billion market capitalization. CCB shares have jumped 25.5 percent from
their IPO price.
Another Chinese state lender, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China,
also plans a multibillion-dollar IPO, although it has not yet chosen
investment bankers.

Porcelains of twelve animal signs exhibited in the artwork center of the
National Museum of China appealed to visitors on Dec. 28. It is the first
exhibition in China to display twelve animal sign porcelains in a
concentrated way. Based on designs of finest porcelains in the National
Museum and some masterpieces of famous Qing (1616-1911AD) artists, this
collection set was elaborately copied by an appointed workshop in
Jingdezhen City during more than one year. Each of the works was handmade
and marked with a logo of the National Museum of China.

218bln for promoting rural education

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-27 09:32:21

(Source: Xinhua)

Dec.27 - China will spend 218 billion yuan (27.25 billion U.S. dollars)
to help improve the country's education in the rural areas in the next
five years, according to a recent executive meeting of the State Council.
The fund will be jointly provided by both the central and local
governments, according to the meeting, which was presided over by Chinese
Premier Wen Jiabao.
In the next two years, China will also exempt all the education tuitions
and fees for the students in compulsory education period and provide free
textbooks and subsidies for the students from needy families, it said.
At the same time, a mechanism will be established to ensure the wages of
the teachers with middle or elementary schools in the rural areas.
"There remain some outstanding problems in rural compulsory education and
related mechanisms must be streamlined to that end," said Chinese State
Councilor Chen Zhili at the meeting.
She said China will further reform its mechanism that serves to safeguard
the funds for rural education purpose, which should be taken atop the
list of China's education tasks.
"The use of the fund should be carefully managed so that it could be
spent where it should be," she said.

25 cities opened RMB business to foreign banks

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-06 13:43:50

Chinanews, Dec. 5 (By Li Peng) - China Banking Regulatory Commission
(CBRC) Chairman Mr. Liu Mingkang announced on Monday that China will
allow foreign-funded financial institutions to develop RMB-related
businesses in Shantou and Ningbo. In the meantime, in order to encourage
participation of foreign-funded financial institutions in China's
development of the western regions and old industrial bases in the
northeast, China will open up Harbin, Changchun, Lanzhou, Yinchuan and
Nanjing to foreign-funded financial institutions ahead of schedule and
allow them to develop RMB-related businesses in these cities. The number
of cities that allow foreign-funded financial institutions to run
RMB-related businesses has increased from 18 to 25 at present.
At a press conference convened by the State Council's Information Office
Monday, Mr. Liu released a series of new policies to further open up
China's banking sector: to appropriately lower the threshold of
circulating capital for foreign-funded financial institutions to operate
RMB-related business, to implement more favorable admittance policies for
foreign-funded banks to operate RMB-related businesses in the central,
western and northeastern regions and encourage and support foreign-funded
banks to set up branches and divisions and operate in the above regions,
and to adjust the proportion of foreign-funded financial institutions'
forex deposit absorption in China's overall forex asset at a suitable
time next year
By the end of October this year, 71 foreign banks have set up 238
operational institutions in 23 Chinese cities, an increase of 43 before
China's entry to the WTO. Mr. Liu said CBRC will not only open up
relevant businesses to foreign-funded banks in keeping with its WTO
promises but has voluntarily opened up qualified foreign institutional
investors (QFII) trust service, insurance service, trust service of
overseas operation of insurance forex capital and trust service of
insurance companies' stock assets.
By the end of October this year, foreign-funded banks in China have a
total asset of USD84.5 billion in the country, accounting for 2% of all
assets of financial institutions in China's banking sector, their
business volume growing more than 30% annually in recent years, making
them an indispensable power in China's banking sector.

China faces severe AIDS situation

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-29 14:26:16

Chinanews, Beijing, Nov.28 (By Zeng Liming) - State Council AIDS Working
Committee Office Director and Vice Minister of Health Wang Longde
revealed today that five provinces and regions in mainland China have
reported more than 10,000 HIV infection cases each.
On the video conference about national AIDS prevention and treatment,
Wang pointed out that according to statistics, Yunnan, Henan, Xinjiang,
Guangxi and Guangdong had reported over 10,000 HIV infection cases each
by the end of this September, accounting for 77.2% of China's total
number of HIV carriers. It manifests that China's HIV infection mainly
concentrates in some regions. He stressed that though China's AIDS
situation shows low prevalence on the whole, in certain groups and areas
the infection ratio remains high, with epidemic situation still on the
rise.
Wang also mentioned that by the end of this September, China's confirmed
HIV carriers recorded 135,630, among whom 31,143 were AIDS patients and
7,773 were killed by this disease.
