China's largest thread binding books appeared at Book Fair

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-29 15:39:10

300 sets of hand-printed and thread binding "Complete Library in the Four
Branches of Literature," China's largest publication project of thread
binding books ever, were all completed on July 28, 2005, after four years
of efforts. Part of these books will appear in the Cross-strait Book Fair
and will be on display in Xiamen for the first time.

A preview exhibition of the first Cross-strait Book Fair was held in
Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center on July 28, 2005.
In this exhibition, books from Taiwan participated in on-the-spot sales
in the mainland for the first time in 18 years. Industry insiders
predicted that this year Taiwan's book volume entering mainland market
will grow more than 40% over last year.

SMS used to defraud bank customers

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-22 14:16:54

Chinanews, July 21 - A new style of fraud, using mobile phone SMS
messages to pretend to be bank reconciliation, to cheat people out of
their bank deposits, has surfaced in Zhejiang province and appears to be
spreading outward rapidly. The Public Security Agency of Zhejiang
Province has issued an urgent warning to remind people to raise their
wariness and prevent this type of crime from happening.
"Dear Customer, you have spent XXX Yuan on X month X date in Shanghai's
Trust-Mart, please confirm this amount with the ICBC bank. If there is
any error please call 021-51023052." If you receive such an SMS message
on your mobile phone, please do not believe its authenticity. Recently, a
38-year old Miss Li of Xinqiao Town, Wenzhou received such a message.
Confused, she immediately called the phone number in the SMS message to
explain that she did not make that expenditure in Shanghai and the other
party on the phone immediately gave her two fake phone numbers for the
Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau and the China Unionpay
Administration Bureau and told the victim that her account has been
targeted by a criminal enterprise and requested that she immediately
transfer the money in her account to a safe account. This way, Miss Li's
530,000 Yuan (65,300 USD) vanished.
Similar types of crimes have happened quite a few times. Police said that
this type of fraud was quite new but very harmful to society and could
spread to many other places. Police reminded people to raise their
wariness to prevent such types of crimes from happening.

Taiwan's forex reserves ranks world No3

Chinanews, July 20 - Statistics released by Taiwan's Directorate General
of Budget Accounting and Statistics on July 19th indicate that judging
from statistics of foreign exchange reserves excluding gold, at the end
of this June, Taiwan's foreign exchange reserves were 253.615 billion
USD, making the region rank No. 3 in the globe after Japan and Mainland
China. Its foreign exchange reserves can back up 17.3 months of imports,
ranking next to Japan in the world.
According to Taiwan's Central News Agency, based on information from
"International Financial Statistics" by the International Monetary Fund
and from the Central Bank, the Directorate General of Budget Accounting
and Statistics gave a statistical report which reads that in the past
decade, Germany's foreign exchange reserves excluding gold decreased 28.6
billion USD, Italy's declined 5.9 billion USD, while forex reserves of
all other major countries saw uptrend.
At the end of 2004, foreign exchange reserves of Japan were 833.9 billion
USD, topping other countries in the world, growing sharply by 708 billion
USD compared with the amount of 125.9 billion USD at the end of 1994,
with the growth rate ranking first in the globe. Mainland China's foreign
exchange reserves accumulated rapidly due to continued surplus of foreign
trade and influx of foreign investment, reaching 614.5 billion USD at end
of 2004, ranking No. 2 in the world.

Drought threatens elks in Dafeng

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-04 14:03:26

Elks in Jiangsu Dafeng Elk National Nature Reserve are drinking from the
ditch on July 1, 2005. Since Mar. this year, the Reserve only recorded
60mm precipitation. About 1000 poplars died of the drought, and the
plants recover slowly, causing inadequate food and water for the elks. If
the dry weather continues, it will threaten the lives of 819 elks. It is
estimated to take 5 million yuan to establish electrical irrigation
stations and build canals.

Chinese govt moves to cool economic growth

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-28 08:45:07

(Source: Xinhua)

BEIJING, Apr.28 - China's economic watchdog is moving to slow economic
growth after recording a rise in fixed assets investment of almost 30
percent in the first quarter.
The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has urgedlocal
governments to tighten controls on land use and lending to prevent
investment rising too rapidly.
National Bureau of Statistics figures show investment in roads, factory
equipment and other fixed assets grew 27.7 percent, an increase of 4.9
percentage points year on year.
Investment in urban areas climbed 29.8 percent to 1.16 trillionyuan,
while that in rural areas came to 230 billion yuan, up 18.1 percent.
The government has launching the "socialist new countryside" campaign to
boost rural development, which was left behind in the reform and
opening-up drive of the past two decades.
However, more than half of China's provinces recorded alarming growth
rates or more than 35 percent in investment, and 16 manufacturing
industries reported more than 40 percent.
Fan Jianping, an expert with the State Information Center, saidlocal
governments had planned too many projects this year, the start of the new
11th five-year blueprint, risking overheating thenational economy.
Zhang Liqun, a research fellow with the Development Research Center of
the State Council, said the soaring investment was tied into recent
elections of local officials, who encouraged investment to demonstrate
their political performance.
The State Council had outlined a decision, made at an executivemeeting
chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao this month, to avert an overheating economy
by tightening controls on fixed asset investment and money supply.
The high rate of investment in some regions and industries had resulted
over-production in many sectors, he said.
Steel, aluminum, calcium carbide, cement, coal, automobiles and textiles
are among the main over-producing industries.
The NDRC said domestic demand for cement in 2005 was less than 1.05
billion tons, while production capacity was 1.3 billion tons, of which
about 60 percent was low-grade.
The NDRC was in the process of publishing policies to halt
over-production in key industries, said a spokesman.
The Chinese Academy of Social Science (CASS) on Monday issued are port
predicting gross domestic product (GDP) is to grow by 9.6 percent this
year, while fixed assets investment will exceed 10 trillion yuan,
accounting for 52.7 percent of GDP.
Experts with the CASS said the government should adjust the policy to
encourage domestic consumption, so as to ease the burden of
over-investment.

Qinghai-Tibet Railway to start trial operation soon

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-24 16:09:04

Chinanews, Apr. 24 - The Golmud-Lhasa section of the Qinghai-Tibet
Railway will be put into trial operation on July 1 and both domestic and
foreign tourists can travel to Tibet by train. On Apr. 20, a travel
agency in Beijing has taken the lead to launch routes of visiting Tibet
by train. A ten-day tour package is estimated to cost 3,980 yuan (US$500)
and over 80 tourists have registered for the tour by now.
It was reported that related departments have basically reserved all
seats on the train for the debut trip on July 1 and tickets for travel
agencies will be sold after July 2. Individual tourists will have little
chance to get tickets for the trip on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway several
days before the railway officially begins operation.
It was learned that the special trains to Lhasa are superior to ordinary
trains in facility. The carriages are totally enclosed and furnished with
hard sleepers and soft sleepers and also free oxygen supply systems for
tourists. When the train slowly goes toward the plateau, such facilities
can help tourists adapt their physical conditions to the plateau
environment and also enable the elderly to travel to Tibet by train.
The Golmud-Lhasa section includes nine sight-seeing stops including those
located in Mt. Yuzhu, Tuotuo River and Tanggula. These stops are all
equipped with a sight-seeing platform 500 meters in length and 1.25
meters in height, tourists can overlook scenes and take photos on the
platforms.
An insider from the travel agency revealed that only 1,000 tourists will
be admitted to the Potala Palace each day. However, during the high
tourist season, 5,000 tourists travel to Tibet by air or by coach. Once
the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is open to traffic, Tibet will welcome 10,000
tourists daily, of whom only one tenth can enter the Potala Palace. It is
learned that the local government may promulgate a new measure soon to
alleviate the pressure from large tourist volumes.
A single trip from Beijing to Tibet extends over 4000 kilometers and
takes 48 hours by train.

China held achievements exhibition for IPR protection

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-18 14:19:58

Chinanews, Beijing, Apr.18 (By Wei Xi) - China Achievements Exhibition
for Intellectual Property Protection opened in Beijing on April 16. It
was the first time for China to host a large-scale exhibition for
protection of intellectual property rights (IPR).
Facing repeated US criticism of China's IPR protection, China is
adjusting its previous policy of keeping silent. It has not only made
counterattacks against unreasonable criticism, but also actively
explained to the US its resolution and measures in IPR protection.
This high-level exhibition was jointly organized by 11 Chinese
authorities. The Ministry of Information Industry, the Supreme People's
Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, and 15 key regions involved in
special IPR protection campaigns participated in the exhibition.
The exhibition set up sections for government authorities, different
regions and enterprises to showcase China's IPR protection achievements
in recent years. Models of Long March carrier rocket series and the
Shenzhou VI spacecraft independently developed by the China Aerospace
Science and Technology Corporation were also on display at the exhibition.
The exhibition will last eight days and close on April 23.
