Paris fashion: Castelbajac's British icons

www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-01 16:20:29

A model presents a creation for Jean-Charles de Castelbajac 27 February
2006 during the Autumn-Winter 2006-07 ready-to-wear collections in Paris.

PARIS - Britain -- its icons, culture and even its passport -- inspired
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac's bright and witty catwalk comeback.
From iconic Brits -- Shakespeare, Robin Hood, Queen Victoria, Princess
Diana, George Best and Kate Moss -- to the multi-coloured Union flag and
Buckingham Palace busbies, de Castelbajac chose 'Cool Britannia', of past
and present, for the French house's return after a four-season absence.
'Dedicated to The Who, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, The Pretty Things of
Today', he made witty references to British culture for a punchy, sporty
collection with a strong dash of humour.
The pacey show, set to upbeat music by a live band, was full of red,
white and blue, but also yellow and green, black and white.
His cropped shirts came in silver or pinstripe, while he added epaulets
with thick red fringing, yellow 'smiley' buttons or black patent bone
motifs.
Coats enveloped the body for winter warmth and bright ski gear was ready
for heading straight out on to the slopes, complete with skis.
A red crochet-effect Empire skirt and top had a cutsey yellow ribbon tied
at the back, but was perhaps not the kind of outfit most of us would wear
to walk the dog in, as the model was doing down the catwalk.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister to visit Iran

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-24 08:59:03

(Source: Xinhuanet)

BEIJING, Feb. 23 - Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Lu Guozeng will pay a
working visit to Iran for political consultations from Feb. 24 to 26,
Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao announced here Thursday.
The two sides are expected to exchange views on bilateral relations, Iran
nuclear standoff and other issues of common concern.
During the visit, he said, the two sides will discuss how to ease the
crisis under the current circumstances and what measures to take to avoid
intensification of the issue so as to finally resolve the issue through
negotiations and dialogues.
The Chinese side hopes that the parties concerned would keep restraint
and patience, and create conditions for the resumption of talks given
that there is still room for solving the issue within the framework of
the International Atomic Energy Agency, the spokesman said.
Iran is an important country in the region, Liu said, both sides will
also have an exchange of views on regional and international issues of
common concern during the visit.
Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing said on Wednesday at a press
conference together with visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter
Steinmeier that "the days before the March 6 meeting of the IAEA are
crucial."
Li said China hopes Iran's nuclear issue would be properly solved through
diplomatic means.

held on Quanzhou's Dejimen Square in the morning of Feb. 12th,

China may eradicate poverty by 2050

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-09 09:23:32

(Source: Xinhuanet)

BEIJING, Feb. 9 - In 2050, 1.3 billion Chinese will live in a moderately
developed society, with a minimum monthly income of 1,300 U.S. dollars,
an average life-expectancy of more than 80 years and social services
available to all, according to a new report.
The blueprint was drawn up by a research team with the Chinese Academy of
Sciences. Using statistics provided by national institutes and world
organizations, the report said that by then, no one in China will live
with an annual income of less than 668 yuan (81 U.S. dollars) per capita,
the country's absolute poverty line.
He Chuanqi, head of the research team who compiled the report, told
Xinhua that to attain this goal, China should follow two stages of social
transformation. It should first turn into a city-based industrialized
society from the present agricultural one, and then step into a
knowledge-oriented society with rural and urban areas developing at the
same rate.
By 2050, 80 percent of the urbanization work in China will have been
completed, the researcher said.
He added that the social transformation will also bring great changes to
peoples' life-styles, as 80 percent of the population would have access
to information industry services, 50 percent could afford overseas travel
and 50 percent would own private cars.
However, he was keen to point out that the current situation is still not
that optimistic. The economic index of China in 2001 equaled that of the
United States 100 years ago. China is lagging far behind developed
countries in terms of urbanization, life-expectancy and adult literacy.
He also noted that the social transformation will change peoples'
opinions and life-styles, thus evoking controversy and provoking social
problems.
"Chinese society is now undergoing the first stage of its transformation
towards an industrialized society," He said, adding the economic
modernization in China has been faster than the social modernization over
the past 50 years.
