Drought threatens elks in Dafeng

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-04 14:03:26

Elks in Jiangsu Dafeng Elk National Nature Reserve are drinking from the
ditch on July 1, 2005. Since Mar. this year, the Reserve only recorded
60mm precipitation. About 1000 poplars died of the drought, and the
plants recover slowly, causing inadequate food and water for the elks. If
the dry weather continues, it will threaten the lives of 819 elks. It is
estimated to take 5 million yuan to establish electrical irrigation
stations and build canals.
