China customs seized 467.9kg of drugs in 2005

Chinanews, Beijing, Jan. 17 (By Ruan Yulin) - The General Administration
of Customs revealed on Tuesday that last year, customs investigated 164
drug trafficking cases, seized 467.9kg of narcotics of various kind, and
seized 204 drug trafficking suspects.
Targeting the crackdown of organized criminal groups, the destruction of
their networks, the capture of major drug traffickers and the seizure of
narcotics, customs investigated a large number of major drug trafficking
cases. The 467.9kg of seized narcotics include 59kg of heroin, 118kg of
ice, 153kg of opium, 94kg of ketamine and 12kg of cannabis. Among the
solved cases, 63, or 38%, involved more than 1kg of narcotics. Narcotics
seized in these cases amounted to 448.7kg, accounting for 96% of all
seized drugs.
Relevant officials of the General Administration of Customs said that
besides active special programs to crack down drug trafficking, customs
also pushed forward scientific on-site investigation and equipped
front-line narcotics squads with X-ray screening facility, portable
narcotics detectors and precursor chemicals detection cases. Moreover,
customs reinforced supervision of drug trafficking and built a solid
barrier between the mainland and narcotics producing areas in other
countries and regions such as the "Golden Triangle" and determinedly
combat trafficking of new types of narcotics such as ketamine and other
psychotropic drugs and drug trafficking through traveler inspection
channels.
