Chinanews, Kunming, Oct.19 (By Zhang Min) - Yunnan's Yuanmou County,
hometown of the earliest human beings in China, the Yuanmou men, made an
application to the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) recently in the hope
that the torch for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games be lighted in Yuanmou.
The Yuanmou men who lived on the earth about 1.7 million years ago were
regarded as the starting point of China's history and also among the
world's earliest human beings who knew how to use fire.
Wang Chongliang, chairman of Yunnan Yuanmou Tourism Co., Ltd. which
submitted the application to the Information Office of the State Council
and COC on behalf of Yuanmou County for Yuanmou to be the lighting spot
of Olympic torch, said that green Olympic, scientific Olympic and
humanistic Olympic are three major concepts proposed by 2008 Beijing
Olympic Games and the concepts of "green" and "humanistic" conformed with
Yuanmou's two characteristics.
Yuanmou is situated in northern Yunnan and closely related to "fire."
Yuanmou became the origin of human culture as Yuanmou men were among the
first to use fire. Due to its location in the Jinsha River Canyon, it is
always dry and hot here. Therefore, Yuanmou is one of the few hottest
places in Yunnan. Moreover, it is also known as "natural greenhouse" and
an important vegetable producing region in Yunnan. The "torch festival"
is a ceremonious festival of the Yi ethnic group living here. During June
and July in China's lunar calendar, the Yi ethnic group will light
torches to drive away evil spirits and pray for peaceful life. The
magnificent scene of Jinsha River Canyon and marvelous earth forest view
in various forms not only attract more and more tourists, but also make
this place a more and more popular TV and movie base in China. Some
scenes of "the Promise," the latest blockbuster by famous Chinese
director Chen Kaige, were shot here.
